Troubleshooting Common RV Appliance Problems Before You Call for Service

Not every appliance issue needs a technician. A few checks can save you a service call — and a few others are exactly when you should stop and call one.

Refrigerator not cooling

Water heater won’t ignite

Furnace not blowing warm air

When to stop and call a professional: if you smell propane (often described as a rotten-egg odor), don’t troubleshoot — shut off the tank if it’s safe to reach, ventilate the RV, avoid any open flame or switch, and get everyone out until it’s been checked. The same goes for a refrigerator’s sealed cooling unit — these use pressurized ammonia and should never be opened or repaired as a DIY project. And test your carbon monoxide and propane detectors regularly; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes CO poisoning symptoms can resemble the flu at lower exposure levels, which is part of why it’s often missed early.
